Enclosed back garden in Minster with freshly mowed lawn and brick boundary walls

The job

This was a scheduled maintenance visit for a customer in Minster, a village just outside Sandwich in east Kent. The property has a good-sized enclosed back garden with a brick-walled boundary -- a layout that is common in the newer housing estates around Minster and makes for a well-defined, manageable lawn. The brief was a full back lawn mow and tidy, which we carried out in around 60 minutes.

How we work on a regular maintenance visit

A maintenance mow is straightforward in principle, but there are a few things that separate a decent result from a poor one. We adjust cutting height based on the season and the condition of the grass -- in May, with growth picking up, a slightly higher cut is usually better than taking it short, which stresses the grass and can leave it vulnerable to dry spells. We edge and strim around the perimeter, paving slabs, and any obstacles after the main cut, which gives the clean-edged finish that makes the difference between a tidy garden and a slightly untidy one. Clippings go in the bin -- we do not leave cuttings on the surface unless the customer specifically wants a mulch cut.

The result

The garden came up neat and even, with clean edges. A monthly maintenance schedule through spring and summer keeps this kind of enclosed garden looking consistently tidy without letting the grass get long enough to become a bigger job.
