A newly planted summer border at a garden in East Kent, with marigolds and young bedding plants in turned-over soil against a brick wall

What we did

First job was the lawn edge -- strimmed back to a clean, straight line along the fence, so the grass reads as a tidy lawn again rather than fading into the path. Small change, big difference to how the whole garden looks.

Then onto the borders. The bed was turned over and planted up with summer bedding -- marigolds and geraniums -- spaced out to fill in and come into their own over the next few weeks. By mid-summer it will be a solid block of colour against the brick wall.

  • Lawn edge strimmed back to a clean line
  • Border turned over and prepared
  • Summer bedding planted -- marigolds and geraniums

A satisfying one: bare soil and a scruffy edge in the morning, a tidy garden you would happily look out on by the afternoon.

A note on summer bedding

Late May into June is prime time to get summer bedding in. The risk of frost has passed across East Kent, the soil has warmed up, and there is a full growing season ahead for plants to establish and flower.

Marigolds and geraniums are a reliable pairing for a sunny border -- both are hardy through a British summer, flower for months with very little fuss, and only ask for the odd deadheading and a drink in a dry spell. Good value for colour that lasts.

Tidy-ups and planting

Not every job is a regular lawn cut. If you would like your garden tidied and planted up for the summer -- edges sorted, borders filled, the lot looking cared for -- get in touch. We can usually take a look and quote on the spot.
